maven's vision: As the sun started to twilight its way behind the hills, I steered the wheel of the Acura down the hairpin bends and snaking road, half listening to the young man-to-be-a- photographer sitting next to me, telling me how much he had learned in just couple of hours. I cut him off before he could get into details, "Don't worry, " I said, in a completely involuntary reflex, with no intention of changing the subject. "I always find something at the end". I felt his quizzical gaze on me. After 5 minutes of driving, I slammed my foot on the brakes. "That's it!" I said. "This is our end of the day gift! Gear up!" As I was fiddling with the settings on the already tripod mounted camera, Tarith was struggling to perform the flash like speed tripod setting I taught him earlier. "Slow" I said in a flat tone. He mumbled an acknowledgment. "Looks like Norman Bate's house..." I added.
"Who?" he asked.
"Ever seen the movie Psycho?"
He shook his head,"Nope"
"Yeah, you're too young. And have a little interest in classics with that iPhone glued to your head like a second ear."
"What's it about?'
Ignoring this question, I examined the settings on his Canon 7D. "Manual," I said. "Remember what I said? Never trust the camera's AF focusing. Only a beginner does that."
"But I am a beginner..."
"I know that, silly. But not when you're with me". I switched the Image Stabilizer and AF off. Set it to Mirror Lock up. " Here! Now, just keep on squezzing that remo-Jesus-even-wireles control".
I heard clicks. I heard beeps. I heard huffing n puffing. I heard rubbing feet against the pebbles. Rubbing his feet? Easy skiddo!
After a while, we went through the shots. "Back!" I cheered, noticing a ghostly silhouette of wings. "The previous image..."
There it was! A hawk or could be an eagle or a crow or shoot me if cared was a huge bird right above Norman Bates' House on the hill. He had, like we all do notice things in the image after reviewing it, captured an accidental wonder.
'I have a feeling this will make a great composite. Now, about Psycho..."
